General Information

The first game ever released in the EZ2DJ Series, released on April 20, 1999. 'EZ2DJ The 1st TRACKS' quickly dominated the korean domestic rhythm game scene pushing out the game that it was heavily inspired by, Beatmania. The gameplay is very similar to that of the original Beatmania with the primary difference being the addition of a pedal. It was also the first arcade rhythm game to introduce the 'Long Note'. There are 4 game modes a player can choose from: Exercise, Street Mix, Radio Mix, and Club Mix. 2 players can play at the same time in either the standard mode, where each player plays a unique chart for the song, or 'Battle Mode' where players play the same chart and compete for the best score. It was awarded with the Grand Prize at the 1999 Korea Game Awards.

  • Slogan:
    • EZ2DJ, A REAL TIME DJ MIXING SIMULATOR
  • Notes have 4 judgements, COOL, GOOD, MISS or FAIL.
  • On the song selection screen, the BPM and the difficulty rated out of 7 is displayed under each song.
  • At the beginning of the play screen, the information of the song being played is displayed on the lower right corner for a brief moment.
  • On the final result screen, the song title appears as the genre of the song.
  • There are a total of 24 tracks - including the 2 used in the "Exercise" mode.
  • Hip Hop theming for the BGM of each menu.

Modes

Exercise

A tutorial mode where the player is introduced to the controls and gameplay of EZ2DJ. It is presented by "DJ TOMATO", a mascot of the game at the time. After 2 lessons are completed, the player plays through an easier version of "Reggae" song - You love the life you live, rather than the normal version available in Street Mix. Selecting this mode consumes a credit. This mode was removed in subsequent versions of the game, with a similar type of tutorial mode only returning 17 years later in NT.

Street Mix

The standard play mode where players can play up to 4 stages in the 5k playstyle. Each stage the player can select the song they want to play, with each stage having a different selection and more difficult songs available. If the player fails they are kicked out of their current song and game over. The player can continue their credit after failing by entering a credit and pressing start during the "Continue" sequence.

Radio Mix

A precursor to what would eventually eventually become the course mode. After selecting a station the player plays 5 predefined songs in succession in the 5k playstyle.

Club Mix

A mode with 4 stages played in succession with no break, played in the 10k playstyle. The first song is selected in a menu like normal, but subsequence songs are selected during gameplay with one of the turntables, as the next song starts immediately after the current song is completed.

1st TRACKS features commands that can activate hidden features:

Remember 1st?

With the release of 6th Trax, a mode called "Remember 1st?" was included which would launch 1st TRACK when selected. The mode is identical to the original game apart from the "Continue" feature being removed, where instead once you game over you are kicked out and taken back to the 6th TRAX title screen. It is not a "simulated" version of 1st tracks running in 6th TRAX but rather a completely updated version of 1st that runs as a standalone program that can only be launched through the ingame mode select. After a successful credit the 1st TRACKS credits sequence is played and the player is taken back to the 6th TRAX title screen.

Versions

Due to the rarity of functional copies of 1st TRACKS, the most well documented version is 1.02a, the version made for the 6th TRAX "Remember 1st?" mode. There are only two other known variants, 1.01 and 1.03. The difference between these versions is unknown.
